I don't know how to describe it really. She was one of the biggest stars in the 80s and 90s. To put it in perspective, beginning with What Have You Done for Me Lately up to the Damita Jo album, with the exception of The Pleasure Principle, every single she released in the U.S. went top 10. I'm not counting songs like Got Til it's Gone because they were radio only singles. I'm not sure about Michael, but Madonna can't even claim that. She was huge.

For one, she was the highest paid musical act in the world, signing the biggest recording contract in history-twice. And although the power divas Whitney, Mariah & Celine were a major presence, Janet was in her prime during that time, and her only sole competition was Madonna, and that's when she was in her prime. For example, the Rhythm Nation tour was the highest grossing tour by a female artist in 1990, and Janet was the only female in the top 10 highest grossing tours that year-and that was the same year as the Blond Ambition tour.
